An irregular club shaped growth, surface rough, and cracked, dark brown to black, to about 8 cm high
On stumps and logs of deciduous trees, favouring beech
Ascospores spindle shaped, smooth (20-32) x (5-9) µm2
Take care not to confuse with the more delicate X. longipes which favours Sycamore and other Acer species
