Cap

Convex, sometimes with a narrow central bump, expanding with age, fibrillose to scaly, pale brown with a darker centre when young, becoming darker brown to reddish brown with age, to about 5 cm across

Gills broad, pale brown to greyish

Cylindrical, fibrous, pale brown when young, becoming darker from the base with age

Habitat

On soil, usually with deciduous trees, but also with coniferous trees

Microscopic Features

Spores irregular, smooth (8.5-12) x (5.5-7) µm2. Basidia club shaped, four spored. Gill cystidia somewhat irregular, some spindle shaped, often with crystals at the apex, some balloon shaped, often with a small papilla at the apex.
