Cap

Convex, expanding with age, smooth when dry, slimy when moist, cream, pinkish or ochraceus, covered with reddish brown velar remnants, to about 10 cm across

Emarginate, broad, crowded, whitish or pinkish when young, becoming reddish brown

Stem

Cylindrical, often broader at the base, attached to a long tapered tap root or rhizoid, whitish, becoming brown from the base, covered with woolly scales, ring membranous

Habitat

On rich soil in deciduous woods, favouring beech, growing from a long buried rhizoid that reaches down to an animal's latrine or the buried remains of a dead animal

Microscopic Features

Spores ellipsoidal or almond shaped, warty, dextrinoid (8-10.5) x (4.5-6) µm2. Basidia clavate, mostly four spored, some two spored. Gill edge cystidia cylindrical, irregular, often with expanded tips.
