Convex, expanding with age, often with a central depression, colour variable, yellowish brown, dark grey brown, sepia or cream, hygrophanous, drying paler, radially lined, to about 5 cm across

Gills

Adnate, or emarginate, broad, distant, pale becoming pink with age

Stem

Cylindrical or tapered, smooth to fibrillose, greyish to grey brown

Flesh

Firm, colour as per surface

Smell

Usually nitrous, but sometimes indistinct

Taste

Indistinct, or unpleasant, petroleum-like

Microscopic Features

Spores angular, 5 to 6 sides (8-10) x (7-8) µm2. Basidia club shaped, 4 spored, clamped. Gill cystidia absent. Pileipellis composed of cyclindrical hyphae. Clamps present in all tissues.
