Conical, then flattened, usually with a small central bump, smooth, sometimes with remains of the veil, margin lined, grey to grey brown, to about 9 cm across
Adnexed, crowded, white
Slender, tapered upwards, finely scaly, white, emerging from a distinct fleshy sack, or volva
Summer to autumn
In mixed deciduous woods, favouring beech and oak
Spores spherical, smooth (9-12) µm
Edible, but could be confused with poisonous species
